Evaluations of high school Out-of-School Time (OST) programs nationwide provide consistent documentation of the inverse relationships between youth risk-levels and their likelihood of participating in an OST program. RSCG’s proprietary research confirms this trend and provides an insightful nuance: the outcome offered by a specific OST program is correlated with the risk levels of students who are willing to join that program. Across various research studies, RSCG HAS IDENTIFIED FIVE GROUPS OF TEENS BASED ON THEIR INTERESTS IN THE SPECIFIC OUTCOMES OF OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME PROGRAMS. Besides having similar interests, these groups share perspectives on their use of personal time and engage in similar risk behaviors. The fifth group, termed “non-joiners,” is identified to not have interest in OST program outcomes.
RSCG DEVELOPED THE DRIVE ESCALATION™ MODEL TO HELP PROGRAM PROVIDERS REALIZE THE POTENTIAL IMPACT of escalating teens from one outcome-driven level to another. The five groups are organized laterally and can be perceived as stepping-stones. RSCG helps communities take advantage of this research by identifying the system-level changes necessary and assisting with their implementation.
Study findings have shown that POSITIVE OUTCOMES are only possible if a teen is willing to expose him or herself to the necessary positive influence. With proper training and tools, adult coordinators could identify the current level of their teen participant and leverage their relationship to escalate youth to the next level. Rather than expose an indifferent youth to a specific program with an outcome that he/she does not care about, adult coordinators are aware of the teen’s current interests and focus their relationship on escalating the teen’s drive. BY AFFECTING A TEEN’S DRIVE, OST PROGRAMS ARE CHANGING THEIR PRIORITIES, MINDSET AND BEHAVIORS. DRIVE ESCALATION™ EXPONENTIALLY INCREASES THE IMPACT OF A COMMUNITY’S PROGRAMS. To take full advantage of the Drive Escalation™ model, a high school OST system needs to be organized based on the outcomes each program offers. By organizing programs based on the students’ perspectives of outcome categories, more students enter the OST system at different entry points. With Drive Escalation™ training, adult coordinators of all program types can focus on INCREASING TEEN’S DRIVE, EFFECTIVELY ESCALATING THE OUTCOME-DRIVEN YOUTH TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION. Finally, with a neighborhood network established, providers have other programs to escalate youth to within their neighborhood, creating a functional, non-competitive relationship among providers. RSCG works with communities to establish neighborhood networks to compound impact. With Drive Escalation™ trainings, local community research, and an effective communications strategy, RSCG helps ORGANIZATIONS RECRUIT AND RETAIN MORE TEENS IN PROGRAMS, WHILE INCREASING THE IMPACT OF THEIR PARTICIPATION IN PROGRAMS. The Drive Escalation™ model does not address the “non-joiners” group of youth. RSCG’s Social Branding® Model can be used to reach these youth and escalate them to the “socialite” group.
